WORLD OCEANS WEEK 2013 (WOW'13)

Together We Have the Power to Protect the Ocean

World Oceans Day is celebrated globally on 8th June every year. On this day, people all around the world make an effort to raise awareness for environmental issues facing our planet, especially our ocean.

The aim of the celebration is to create awareness and to interact with multiple levels of the community, especially young people to appreciate the importance of the marine environment. In addition, it can also foster a sense of individual responsibility towards the preservation and conservation of the ocean. Ocean is not only as a food source but also plays an important role in helping to stabilize the world's climate, as large percentage of oxygen generators and major commercial transport medium are sourced from the ocean. Humans have explored less than 10% of the ocean; yet we use it to conduct 90% of our international trade and 50% of our communications. Unfortunately, 80% of marine pollution comes from human terrestrial activities.

Towards generating excellence through innovation in the field of oceanography and marine science, National Oceanographic Directorate (NOD) will also be celebrating the day nationally. In conjunction with the event, NOD will be organizing World Oceans Week 2013 (WOW'13) in collaborations with multiple government agencies, NGOs, universities, industry players and the public.

Various activities and events have been planned towards WOW'13 which will be conducted from 3rd to 11th June 2013, in various locations all over Malaysia. Among the activities are listed below:
